Dutchbudz Meets West Cartel
Welcome to "Dutchbudz Meets". Our new interview series where we, Dutchbudz, “meet” and celebrate music artists and industry talent from the Netherlands.
We want to learn about what homegrown talent does but also the person behind the talent.
Dutchbudz Meets: West Cartel
West Cartel are a Dutch DJ/Producer duo, producing a wide variety of genres, from EDM, to all kinds of house to Electro pop. West Cartel consists of Tim Krikken & Houtan Notash.
How did you get your start?
We met at a birthday party where Houtan was the DJ, Tim asked him to play some songs together and we had much fun, a few days after we contacted to have studio session together and one thing let to another.
Biggest working achievement?
There are several achievements that we're proud of, a Nr 2 spot in the Beatport Bigroom top 100. Getting played at several national radio stations in South Africa, and releasing songs on a bigger label like SmileCreations Records.
What is your dream festival to work with?
Probably Tomorrowland, But Ultra music festival is a good second place.
Favourite gig you’ve played?
That has to be BevrijdingsPop Haarlem, it's a dutch festival on a nation memorial day, where we celebrate our freedom after World War 2. I played my set in the afternoon on the smallest stage but all the stages around mine had a break so all the crowd came to my stage, It was jam packed and everyone was going crazy. There where around 5000/6000 people on a spot meant to be for 2000 maximum.
The first thing you do when you get up?
Eat my breakfast while watching youtube, look at my social media or listen to music!
Who do you most want to work with?
In the dance scene I would love to release a song in Revelead Recordings one day, and in the pop scene i would love to make a track with some bigger Singer/songwriters.
I’m trying to achieve...
To see as many people as possible enjoying my music, it's the best feeling to see for instance a total stranger enjoying your music while they don't know it's yours :D
If I had a theme song, it would be...
Created by two steps from hell in the first place, and it would be an epic film music type song slowly uplifting to a huge climax with choirs, orchestra's and the full package. I love film music and get a lot of inspiration out of it.
I end my day with...
Making music or watching some game live streams or youtube. it depends on my mood.
I’m trying to learn...:
As much as I can, I want to understand all genres and sounds and why people enjoy certain sounds, when to make a club track or when to make a song that people would enjoy listening in a car.
My most used apps at the moment are...
Logic pro x, instagram, youtube, twitch.
The podcast I'm currently listening to is...
Digital punk Unleashed, It's a hardstyle/rawstyle podcast. I secretly also run a few aliases in the hardstyle and hardcore, I think it's safe to say I like to make a wide variety of music haha.
Best crowd at an event you’ve performed...
Either the crowd at bevrijdingspop Haarlem or a local beachclub near my hometown where everybody went full out of control with dancing and screaming and having fun.
Best crowd at an event you’ve attended...
Defqon 1, it's a Harderstyle's festival in the Netherlands, Once a year at Defcon 1 everybody goes completely crazy, people dance a little more than other festivals, screaming a little louder, enjoying everything a little bit more. In my opinion the most fun Festival in the world.
Work from home or work from an office?
Work from home, Even though I don't mind people around me, but I work the best in my own safe environment.
What does your “office” setup look like?
It's my old bedroom at my parents house, I turned it into a studio with foam, diffusors to spread the soundwaves, bass traps, Dynaudio speakers and my interface and midi keyboard. It's not super hi tech, but it does the job.
Where can we find you?
